FOOTBALL

Call it the "Heartbreak in Storrs." The Bulls played a tremendous game Saturday night at Connecticut against the heavily favored and undefeated Huskies falling 26-25 as UConn's David DeArmas kicked an 18-yard field goal with 10 seconds left in regulation.

UB built a 10-0 lead in the first quarter behind a Gerald Carlson 47-yard field goal-tying a career-best-and a 56-yard interception return by Terrence Fisher. It became 16-0 when Mike Chichester forced a fumble by DeArmas, UConn's punter, in his own end zone that Ibrahim Giles recovered for another UB score.

Sophomore tailback Anthony Swan, who had 145 yards on the night, made it 22-0 with a five-yard run late in the first half, before the Huskies scored to make it 22-6 at halftime.

Todd Pace added 73 yards rushing for the Bulls in the game, while Fisher, Craig Guest and Pete Conley led the UB defense. Fisher had seven tackles and a fumble recovery to go with his first career touchdown, while Guest and Conley each had 15 tackles.

Jason Kuehn had a career-best three quarterback sacks. Keith Hansen (seven tackles) and Steve McDuffie (six tackles) combined on a sack as well for the Bulls. Freshman kick returner Kali Watkins had 106 yards on three returns, including a career-best of 59 yards.

The Bulls, now 2-2, return to UB Stadium to host the Villanova Wildcats for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The series is tied at five wins each with the Bulls posting a 29-27 win in the last meeting between the two schools. Ironically that win by UB, over the Division I-AA Wildcats prompted talk of the then-Division III Bulls returning to Division I. That became a reality in February of 1986 when the Intercollegiate Athletics Board (IAB) approved UB's eventual move back to Division I in 1993.
