2001-2002 Academic Calendar
UB acknowledges the observance of religious holidays in accordance with New York State Law. Although classes will be held on most of these days, students may approach instructors to be excused for the purpose of religious observance. Following our clear obligation to conform to state law, no student is to be penalized for being absent from class on any of these days, nor is any faculty member who chooses to cancel classes, or professional staff member who chooses to observe a religious holiday. Professional staff, however, are required to observe union contract agreements and charge the time used for this purpose.
As a further matter of policy, the university asks all faculty members not to hold tests, exams or crucial presentations on religious holidays. In cases where problems might arise, faculty members should go out of their way to make sure that students do not feel singled out by having to miss required class tests or exercises. The university stresses the importance of everyone's complete understanding and cooperation in this regard.
If satisfactory arrangements cannot be worked out between the student and instructor, and failing resolution by the appropriate department chair or dean, an appeal may be taken to the Provost's Office.
If desired, faculty members may request a list of major religious holidays from their respective deans.
