Elementary students watch a demonstration of the universal material tester during National Biomechanics Day.

National Biomechanics Day

On April 12, Bea Santaella Luna, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences, showed fifth-graders from PS #37 (Futures Academy) how UB’s Functional Anatomy and Vertebrate Evolution (FAVE) lab collects data on the biomechanical properties of bone. It took over 300 pounds of force for the universal material tester to break that pork rib using what is called a three-point bending test. The fifth-graders were attending a National Biomechanics Day celebration at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, organized by graduate students led by Matthew A. Wysocki.
