Amenities abound for bicyclists at UB

In an effort to encourage bicycling to and on campus, and make bicyclists feel more welcomed, UB continues to improve its bicycling infrastructure by adding amenities for convenience and practicality. Here are just a few:

  • Earlier this summer, facilities crews began installing 100 new “U-racks” at various locations. Two bikes can be locked up at each rack. Prior to this, UB already had enough racks to support more than 800 bicycles.
  • Parking and Transportation Services encourages all UB bicycle owners to register their bike to help deter theft and be kept in the loop on UB bicycling news and events like Bull Rides and Bike to Work Day. Registration also makes it easier to recover your bike if it gets stolen.
  • Every UB Stampede bus is equipped to carry up to three bikes. If you’re intimidated by the thought of loading your bike onto the bus for the first time, watch this short video on how to do it. (Check out this how-to if you’re riding an NFTA bus.)
  • Bicycle repair kits are available at Goodyear Hall on the South Campus, and in 106 Spaulding Quad in the Ellicott Complex and Wellness Education Services, 114 Student Union, both on the North Campus. The kits include an air pump, tire patch kit and various tools.
  • Dero Fix-It stands are available 27/7 at the Main Circle on the South Campus and outside the Student Union, and near the bike rack at Fargo/Greiner in the Ellicott Complex. The stands make it easy to hang the bike so the pedals and wheels spin freely, and include all the tools necessary to perform basic repairs and maintenance.
  • Parking and Transportation Services offers free winter storage for all registered bicycles. Bike owners can bring theirs to 106 Spaulding Quad during regular business hours beginning Nov. 15 to receive a tag that corresponds with their UB ID number. The bike can then be picked up at Spaulding in the spring. For more information, contact Parking and Transportation at ub-parking@buffalo.edu or 645-3943.
  • Bicyclists can also take advantage of the shower facilities and locker rental in Alumni Arena on the North Campus and in Clark Hall on the South Campus. Lockers come in handy for storing shower supplies.
  • Check out the UB Sustainability website for maps and links to safety tips, local bike shops and other bicycling resources.
  • Here’s a PDF map on the Town of Amherst website that shows you how to travel to the North Campus from the South Campus without traveling down busy Grover Cleveland and Millersport highways.

As resources become available, UB plans to add covered bicycle storage areas and additional bicycle lanes on campus.
