Strayed to open Distinguished Speakers Series

The 28th annual UB Distinguished Speakers Series will open with a lecture by best-selling author Cheryl Strayed at 8 p.m. Sept. 10 in Alumni Arena, North Campus.

Strayed is author of the New York Times’ No. 1 bestseller “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail,” a memoir that has been adapted into a film produced by and starring actress Reese Witherspoon and set to be released in December. Strayed’s personal struggles and story of survival, which have motivated and inspired countless readers, also inspired Oprah Winfrey to revive her book club, making “Wild” its inaugural selection for the launch of Oprah’s Book Club 2.0.  

Strayed also authored the Times bestseller “Tiny Beautiful Things,” a collection of her widely popular “Dear Sugar” columns for, and the critically acclaimed novel “Torch,” a finalist for the Great Lakes Book Award.

Her writing also has appeared in The Best American Essays, The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine, Vogue, Allure, The Missouri Review, Creative Nonfiction, The Sun and elsewhere. Her books have been translated into 26 languages around the world.
