Find answers to frequently asked questions about using features in UB Learns related to grades, assignments and tests.
Why do students see the broken image icon (instead of the image) when taking a test?
A student who is still taking a test after the date and time in Display Until have passed can encounter broken images if you have set the following Test Options:
- Display Until (test availability end date and time) under Test Availability.
- One at a Time under Test Presentation.
Example
You have a test with the following settings:
- Set Timer: 60 minutes.
- Display Until: 5/1/20 at 2:15 p.m.
- One at a Time (Test Presentation): checked.
Based on these settings, a student can start the test at any time before 2:15 p.m. and has 60 minutes to complete the test. If a test is started at 2:00 p.m., the student can encounter the broken image issue after 2:15 p.m. (the time set in Display Until).
Workaround provided by Blackboard
- Extend the Display Until date and time or turn it off.
- You can also uncheck One at a Time under Test Presentation.

What does a paper and pencil icon in the Grade Center mean?
The pencil and paper icon means that a student attempt is in progress.
Why won’t certain Grade Center columns allow me to enter grades?
Calculated Grade Center columns do not allow for manual grade entries. If the cell turns a solid blue color it is a Calculated Column. Calculated Columns combine grades from other columns to create an average, total or weighted grade. Use the Create Column button to make a column in which you can enter a value.
How do I clear a student’s attempt for assignments and tests?
There are times when an instructor needs to clear a student’s attempt on an assignment or test. This may happen when a student:
- Experiences a computer crash.
- Opens and exits a test without submitting it.
- Saves his answers instead of submitting them.
- Needs to resubmit an assignment.
The symbol which designates an “in-progress” or “locked” condition is a paper and pencil icon. Clearing an attempt removes all earlier attempts. Once the attempt is cleared, the student can take the test again or resubmit their assignment.
How to clear an attempt
- Under Control Panel select Grade Center > Full Grade Center.
- Locate the student in the Grade Center.
- Select the double-down arrow within the cell for the assessment that needs to be cleared, then select View Grade Details.
- Under the edit area, click the Clear Attempt button associated with the attempt to clear it.
- Click Return to the Grade Center.
