About Surveys

Surveys differ from Tests in that they are not graded. They are useful for gathering data anonymously from students.

Incorporating surveys into your course involves a multi-step process and includes the following steps:

  • Create a survey.
  • Add questions individually or from a pool.
  • Make the Survey available.
  • View results.

Creating a Survey

  1. Open a Content Area.
  2. Under Assessments select Survey.
  3. Select Create.
  4. Complete page options.
  5. Click Submit and the Survey Canvas appears.

Adding Questions

  1. Select Create Question drop-down menu to select a question type. Alternatively, you can select either Find Questions to select from a pool of questions or Upload Questions. To create a pool of questions refer to instructions about Question Pools (see below).
  2. Follow the directions that appear for each question type at the top of the screen.
  3. In the Question Text field, enter the question you want to ask and enter data in all appropriate areas
  4. Click Submit.
To add additional questions, repeat steps 1–4.
  5. After all questions have been added, click OK.

You can reorder the questions by dragging them to the desired position.

The Create Survey page will include your survey on the list of surveys. You can still modify the survey because it has not been made available.

Making a Survey Available

  1. After creating the survey and clicking Submit, you are brought back to the Survey Canvas.
  2. Click Submit again to be brought to Survey Options.
  3. Under Survey Availability select Yes as your choice for Make the Link Available to make a survey available for students.
  4. You can select other options if desired.
  5. Click Submit.

For previously created surveys, go to Survey Canvas by selecting the double-down arrow to the right of the Survey icon and select Modify Survey Options.

Viewing Survey Results

  1. Go to Control Panel > Grade Center > Full Grade Center.
  2. Select the down pointing icon in front of the title of the survey item you want to view, then select either Attempt Statistics or Download Results.

A checkmark will appear for each student who has completed the survey. Since surveys are anonymous you are not able to see an individual student’s submission.

Pools (Question Sets)

Pools are sets of questions that can be added to any Test or Survey. Pools are useful for storing questions and reusing them in more than one Test or Survey.

Creating a Question Pool

  1. Go to Control Panel > Course Tools > Tests, Surveys and Pools > Pools.
  2. Click Build Pool.
  3. Enter a Name for the pool and optionally a description or instructions.
  4. Click Submit
  5. New questions can be created by using the Create Question dropdown list.
  6. Questions can be added to the Pool from other tests, surveys and pools by clicking Find Questions. You may also use Upload Questions.

When you are done adding pool questions, your pool will be saved in the Pool area of your course.

To use questions from a pool, select an option from the Find Questions menu when creating a test or survey.
