Latest Enhancements to UBlearns

June 2018 was the most recent Blackboard application update for UBlearns.  This update included the following new functionality, featured enhancements and service changes.

Theme Update

The new Blackboard theme will enhance your experience with UBlearns. The new theme features an updated look and feel, color palette and icons, device consistency and a better mobile experience.

  1. Modern Look & Feel: With updated UB colors, fonts, icons and spacing, you will notice a more modern and visually appealing look and feel.
  2. Consistency Across Your Devices: Expect a more uniform experience across all your devices, making it easier for you to switch from your laptop or computer to your phone or tablet.  
    *Please note that with this update, course themes will no longer be supported to further enhance consistency across courses for students
  3. A Better Mobile Experience: With more tools and features optimized for your mobile browser, it’ll be easier for you to complete activities on-the-go from your phone or tablet. And, for quick and easy access to your courses, download the Blackboard Instructor app, available for iOS, Android and Windows devices.

New Functionality

Blackboard Ally

The University at Buffalo is committed to ensuring equal access to information that is available online. As part of this commitment, the Center for Educational Innovation and UB Information Technology are collaborating to bring Blackboard Ally to UBlearns.

Ally automatically checks UBlearns course materials against WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards and provides an accessibility score for each file. For files that don’t align with accessibility guidelines, Ally offers step-by-step instructions on how to improve the accessibility of the document.

Ally also creates alternative, accessible file formats (Tagged PDF, HTML, ePub, Electronic braille and Audio) for students to download.

Ally is enabled in all UBlearns course sites except Summer 18 semester classes.  Summer instructors can enable Ally manually to score existing content and have alternative, accessible file formats automatically created. Enable Ally by going to Control Panel > Customization > Tool Availability.

Submission Receipts

Students can receive a notification email for each assignment attempt with information about the submission including attached files. Students can also access receipts at any time on the My Grades page in the submissions filter area.

Featured Enhancements

Course Availability Status and Update

Instructors can see the availability state of the course and change the state from the main course view.

Expanded Drag and Drop files

The drag-and-drop feature has been added to the Course Files, Content Editor, Blank Page, Blogs, and Journals. If the browser allows, users can drag a folder of files and the files will upload individually.

Grade Center: Delete multiple columns

Instructors can now more easily clean up their grade books by deleting multiple columns at once. Selected manual and calculated columns are removed completely. Selected columns associated with gradable items are cleared of attempt and grade data but remain in the Grade Center.

Important: Deletion of columns and the data contained therein cannot be undone.

Discussion Board: “Replies to Me”

Keeping up with large Discussion Board forums is easier by giving participants a count and filter to just look at new replies from others to posts made by the participant.

Content Editor: Chemistry Notations

The math editor found in the Content Editor has been updated to a newer version of WIRIS. This version adds tools specific to chemistry including an embedded periodic table of elements.

Rubics: Auto Save

Selected levels of performance and feedback when grading with rubrics are automatically saved to the attempt as draft when the rubric is saved.
