Hardware or Software Token

Learn factors to help decide whether to use a sofware token or a fob.

You can use a software token if:

  • you are working on a single UB-owned computer in a single work location
  • you are working on multiple UB-owned computers in multiple locations, and are the only person using those computers
  • you and others are working on a single UB-owned computer in a single location (Multiple software tokens required)

You need a hardware token (fob) if:

  • you are connecting to administrative systems such as HUB from a computer not owned by UB
  • you are working on multiple UB-owned computers in multiple locations
  • your computer has a Linux operating system

A hardware token (fob) can only be used by the person to whom it is assigned.
