Learn how to set up Thunderbird email client for your Linux operating system.

These Instructions Are Only For UBmail (Central Email)

• Students and Alumni: Use UBmail Powered by Google instead.

• Faculty, Staff, Volunteers, Retirees and Medical Residents: Use UBmail Powered by Exchange instead.

Before using Thunderbird:

If you do not already have it, download Thunderbird.

To configure Thunderbird:

  1. Click Create a new account
  2. Click Skip this and use my existing email.
  3. Enter Your name.
  4. Enter your buffalo.edu email address in Email address.
  5. Enter your UBITName password in Password.
  6. Uncheck Remember password (recommended)
  7. Click Continue.
  8. Wait for Thunderbird to automatically detect settings.
  9. Select IMAP (remote folders) or POP3 (keep mail on your computer) depending on your preference.
  10. Click Manual config.
    • IMAP (Incoming):
      1. Make sure Server hostname is imap.buffalo.edu
      2. Change Port to 993
      3. Make sure SSL is SSL/TLS
      4. Change Authentication to Normal password
    • POP (Incoming):
      1. Make sure Server hostname is pop.buffalo.edu
      2. Change Port to 995
      3. Make sure SSL is SSL/TLS
      4. Change Authentication to Normal password
    • SMTP (Outgoing):
      1. Make sure Server hostname is smtp.buffalo.edu.
      2. Change Port to 465
      3. Change SSL to SSL/TLS.
      4. Change Authentication to Normal password.
  11. Make sure Username is your UBITName.
  12. Click Done.

Tested with Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS and Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.8.
