Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile customers will have expanded service coverage on UB North Campus in 2018, thanks to the Verizon Wireless distributed antenna system (DAS) that was recently added to four more buildings. AT&T service will be added to DAS in 2019.

Ketter, Bonner, Bell and the Center for the Arts were added to UB’s North Campus DAS over summer 2018. At this time, Verizon Wireless is the only cell carrier in all buildings with the DAS. T-Mobile service was been added to Davis and Greiner Halls during Fall 2017.

In 2019, the DAS service is planning to add Jarvis and Furnas buildings with others possible as the DAS construction continues to grow.

UB has been working with Verizon Wireless in 2013 on building a DAS network around UB’s North Campus, which seamlessly work together to enhance cell reception in UB campus buildings. New buildings have been added steadily since then. Buildings are prioritized by student demand, as determined by feedback from the annual UBIT Student Experience Survey.

According to the 2018 survey, Verizon and T-Mobile are the top cell carriers among students. AT&T, a close third, has agreed to join UB’s DAS system in 2019, and in the planning stage for integrating their service to the existing DAS infrastructure has begun.

“Once AT&T is supported by the DAS, their coverage will be expanded in all the same places T-Mobile is available today,” said James Giardina, Network Analyst with UBIT’s Network and Classroom Services.

When the project is completed, according to Giardina, all three top carriers amongst our students at UB will have excellent service coverage in all of the same North Campus buildings.
