Mary Dedrick teaches, advises and oversees internships for over 100 students each year as Director of Clinical Education for UB’s Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences. She visits many of her students at their internship sites—she’s always on the move, and no two days are alike.
Mary takes advantage of UBIT tools to stay in sync and in touch with her students—wherever she is, and wherever they are.
“The tech at UB has been really helpful,” Mary said. “I use UBlearns to supervise my student internships…there can they track their hours, and submit weekly logs and write-ups about their experience.”
“I was using Dropbox for everything, and of course I used up my quota really fast.” Not only did UBbox provide Mary a free alternative with unlimited storage, it also made collaborative assignments easier for her and her students.
“My students create a professional portfolio, so I made folders for all of them in UBbox, gave them access, and showed them how to share their folders with other students and give each other feedback. They really liked it!”
Because of UBbox’s commenting feature, grading became easier too. “I got an email every time they commented in UBbox, so I filed those away until it was time to grade them on participation. As a grading tool it was really handy.”
With students placed in internships all over the area, Mary is relying more on conferencing technology to connect with students and get updates about their learning experience.
“Instead of traveling for out of town visits, especially if I haven’t been to a site yet, I meet with the students and their supervisors on Skype.”
In 2018, UB introduced Webex to help faculty members, students and staff connect and collaborate remotely.
