2022-2023 Academic Year
A.J. Franklin is a senior at the University at Buffalo majoring in psychology and minoring in entrepreneurship. Working toward a career in marketing, leadership and artistic expression, Franklin is a marketing student assistant for Blackstone LaunchPad, an assistant features editor for The Spectrum student newspaper and a DJ. Franklin is so passionate about music, in fact, that he often can be found walking around UB between classes with a boombox held in each hand.
With a focus on student leadership and activism, Franklin has served as the director of recruitment for the UB Marketing Association and a member of the School of Management Student Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Franklin also founded and led the “Amplify” party campaign over the course of two student body elections, seeking to enhance student governance and innovate new opportunities for UB’s student body. His passion and drive as a journalist earned him a mention in The Buffalo News for his Spectrum article “Journey’s End and the Refugee Struggle” and an interview with comedian Hasan Minhaj, host of the Netflix original series “Patriot Act.”
During the summer, he has used his time away from UB to promote diversity, equity and inclusion as an intern for the startup Team Real Talk Inc. and as a literacy tutor volunteer with Read 718, which serves students from low-income families in New York City.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Franklin comes from a large family with both West Indian and Caribbean roots. He has many aspirations for his career including working as a marketing manager, journalist, business owner, politician and activist, but his constant goal is to make groundbreaking progress in the world around him and remain genuine to himself while doing so.
