The Office of Alumni Engagement is excited to launch the Trick Out Your Tassel Contest in honor of the Class of 2020!
2020 Best in Show, 1st Place - Abida Tasnim, College of Arts and Sciences. For my cap I looked for inspiration that embodied my academic journey at UB. I used a quote from my favorite artist, Frida Kahlo, to best represent I went through the last four years.
2020 Best in Show, Runner-up: Juefeng Sheng, College of Arts and Sciences. In China, the red-crowned crane has always been called "immortal crane", which means to live forever. In traditional Chinese culture, crane symbolizes longevity, elegance, auspiciousness, and loyalty. The color of the UB is blue. I see the cap as the sky and the crane is flying in the blue sky. It represents my graduation in the free atmosphere at UB.
2020 Best Meme, 1st Place: Marlee Shaffer, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. My cap shows Baby Yoda with a diploma and a Yoda quote, "Much to learn you still have", which is true for any one in any profession.
2020 Best Meme,Runner-up: Jenna Schunke, School of Public Health and Health Professions. My five years at UB has been quite the adventure. I feel as though my cap does an excellent job of capturing UB grads feelings this graduation during the COVID pandemic. I wanted to bring a little humor into graduation this year because we all could use some!
2020 Most Creative, 1st Place - Alexa Calandra, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences - Biomed. For my cap, I wanted to add some light during this dark time! I wanted to show that even in darkness, UB pride strikes bright!!
2020 Most Creative, Runner-up: Elana Kaplan, School of Social Work. I choose to incorporate my favorite show, Friends, and the crazy pandemic thats going on into my cap. I used sharpies to create my cap and I am extremely grateful for this competition since it gave me a fun, stress free activity to do while at home!
2020 Most Inspiring, 1st Place: Elisa Rodriguez, College of Arts and Sciences. : "Sigue Siempre Pa'lante" translates to "Always Keep Moving Forward". The word "pa'lante" is specific to the Puerto Rican Spanish dialect, and are representative of both my heritage and my dedication to academia.
2020 Most Inspiring, Runner-up: Kandis LeBaron, School of Social Work. Hand painted, Glitter, Supergirl theme. Inspired by this Single mom who had a high school diploma and a dream. Seven years ago she thought she could and at 52, she did it! MSW "Hope, Help, and compassion for all!"
2020 UB Spirit, 1st Place: Joyce Adiges, Graduate School of Education. Explaining my transition from BS to Masters in short. I used stickers and taped down the UB Bulls bobble head. That's the end for me at UB.
2020 UB Spirit, Runner-up: Smrati Kushwah,School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. My UB GradCap comprises of some of the places in UB that become a part of any UB student's everyday life. Campus, that makes us bulls feel at home! everything in the cap is handcrafted as my ode to UB :)
The Office of Alumni Engagement congratulates all winners of the 2020 Trick Our Your Tassel Contest! Dozens of entries were considered, and the Young and Future Alumni Leadership Council volunteers enjoyed seeing all the creativity, imagination, and heart put into each design.

All eligible entries will be voted on by the Office of Alumni Engagement and volunteers from the Young Alumni and Future Alumni Leadership Councils.
Contest closes: Wednesday, May 13 at 5 p.m.

Each category will win a UB prize pack (subject to availability) that includes UB- or UB Alumni-branded apparel, hat, mug, license plate holder, decal, PopSocket and/or various other swag.
This contest is open to all registered University at Buffalo undergraduate, graduate, post-doc or professional school students who are age 18 or older and who are graduating during the spring 2020 commencement ceremonies. Participants may submit one handcrafted grad cap design no larger than 12-by-12 inches. Images designed entirely on a computer will not be eligible. Cap designs and photos containing any content that does not adhere to community guidelines, including nudity or references to drugs or alcohol, will not be considered. All entries submitted become the property of University at Buffalo. By participating in this contest, you grant UB permission to use your entire submitted photo and content for design, marketing, advertising and communications purposes. Information provided will not be retained, sold or used in any way other than that which is specifically set forth in these rules.
University at Buffalo may cancel this contest in the event of technical problems or electronic attacks affecting the administration of the contest. Any contest entrant found to intentionally interfere with the operation of the contest, or whose designs are found to be not original, will be disqualified. By your participation in this contest, you agree to release UB from any liability related to the contest or your participation in the contest. UB is not responsible for lost, damaged, delayed or misdirected prizes. Prize(s) may not be redeemed for cash. Prizes may be delivered at a later date.
The winners will be announced on Friday, 5/15.
