Student Success through Intentional Inclusion: Universal Design for Learning at UB
Universal Design for Learning is a researched-based design framework that addresses and celebrates student diversity proactively. In the keynote, you'll briefly encounter what UDL is and why it matters at UB today. You'll be given resources to pursue UDL further as you design and deliver your courses in such a way that all of your students may more effectively and efficiently achieve your rigorous goals.
For those able to join the workshop that follows, we'll dive deeper into your actual courses, learning about best practices for design and delivery, and making changes you can implement right away.
Eric J. Moore, PhD is a professional educator with over a decade of experience in the classroom ranging from teaching drama and English in Kokomo, Indiana to teaching literature and philosophy in international schools in Indonesia and South Korea. Most recently, he has begun a scholarly career in teacher education and higher education instruction for diverse learners.
Moore serves as the UDL and Accessibility specialist for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and conducts private consulting related to inclusive education practices in higher education. He holds a PhD in inclusive education from UT, Knoxville, a MEd from Grand Valley State University and BA in secondary english education from Taylor University.
In this presentation, David Wiley describes Open Educational Resources (OER), why they are promising and how to adopt them in order to significantly improve higher education affordability, student outcomes and breadth of impact.
Nearly all research-based pedagogies proven to be superior to traditional lecturing were designed for fairly high faculty-student ratios. The economics of introductory courses at large universities like UB usually precludes that situation, so SCALE-UP (Student Centered Active Learning Environment with Upside-down Pedagogies) was developed as a way to facilitate highly collaborative active learning with large numbers of students served by small numbers of faculty and assistants.
SCALE-UP is a learning environment that lets faculty get to know their students, even in classes of 100 or more. It enables those students to learn and succeed not only in acquiring content at levels much better than from traditional lectures, but also to practice important 21st century skills like problem solving, communication and teamsmanship.
The approach was initially targeted at undergraduate science and engineering students taking introductory physics courses in large enrollment sections. It has since expanded to multiple areas, including chemistry, math, engineering, biology, business, nursing, history, languages and even literature. It has been adopted by more than 250 institutions and has been used in rooms seating from a dozen to more than 600 students.
