The weather forecast for Friday is cloudy with a chance of...lightening the load on Mother Nature. That’s because UB faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in Green Your Commute Day.
Members of the UB campus community can take part by either riding their bike to work — Friday is Bike to Work Day — or taking alternative transportation.
May is National Bike Month and Bike to Work Day is the biggest among the events happening nationwide this month. Register to ride your bicycle to work and be eligible to win raffle prizes that include UB merchandise, Bikeshare memberships and gear from local bicycle shops.
UB Parking and Transportation Services will have “energizer stations” set up on the North and South campuses, where bike riders can check in between 7:30 and 10 a.m. and power up with some juice, granola bars, fruit and water. Stations will be located at the Main Circle on the South Campus and at Founders Plaza on the North Campus.
The other way to participate is to “green your commute” by walking, taking public transportation, carpooling or driving an electric car. Fill out the quick online survey to help calculate the emissions that will be offset that day, and help UB compete against the other SUNY centers at Stony Brook, Albany and Binghamton. Green Your Commute participants last year helped offset 8.5 tons of carbon on that one day.
Participants are encouraged to share photos of their green commute on social media by using the handle @UBGreen and the hash tags #UBGreenCommute and #GYCD17. One social media user will be selected to be featured on next year’s Green Your Commute poster.
Green Your Commute is sponsored by Parking and Transportation Services and UB Sustainability.
