Meet Samah Asfour, UB Study Abroad Alumna, and hear her speak about how studying abroad as a UB Honors College student and McNair Scholar helped shape her career as an Associate Director of Development and Communications at the Middle East Children’s Institute and now the Communications and Access to Information Manager at the Refugee Solidarity Network. Samah earned an M.A. in Foreign Service with a concentration in Arab Studies from Georgetown University and a B.A. in Political Science and Global Gender Studies with a minor in French from UB. She spent the spring semester of her junior year at the Institute for American Universities (IAU) in Aix-en-Provence, France (SUNY Fredonia) that was largely funded by the Study Abroad Scholarships she received from the Office of International Education – Study Abroad Programs Office, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the nationally competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, that awards scholarship money to encourage Pell Grant recipients to study abroad. As she prepared to graduate from UB, she was encouraged by Elizabeth Colucci from the Office of Fellowships & Scholarships to apply for a Fulbright, was selected and fully funded as an English Teaching Assistant in Jordan for 11 months prior to starting her Master’s Degree at Georgetown University. She is a stellar example of making the very most of every opportunity that is available to our UB students and shares how her semester abroad helped her realize and achieve an internationally-focused career!
