Fall 2017 Workshops

NIH Specific Aims — 10/24/17, noon-1:30 PM

  • Speakers: Scientific Editors Aimee Jo Gibney and Lindsay Chakan
  • Date: October 24, 2017; 12:00-1:30 PM

  • Participation: Limited to 10 and requires submission of a 1-page draft prior to workshop.

As a follow up to John Robertson’s NIH workshop, Lindsay and Aimee will outline the important elements of NIH Specific Aims.  Specific Aims must capture the attention of reviewers and concisely describe the goals of the proposed research, expected outcomes, and the impact on your field of research.  Participants will have an opportunity to submit drafts of their specific aims prior to this session and select drafts will be reviewed as a group. This workshop is ideal for new investigators or any faculty interested in revising their specific aims.  Light refreshments will be provided.

Proposal Development: Working with an editor - 11/10/17, noon-1:30 PM

  • Speaker: Scientific Editor Aimee Jo Gibney
  • Date: November 20, 2017; 12:00-1:30 PM
  • Location: UB Commons, Suite 109 Training Room

As funding becomes increasingly competitive, it is imperative to submit a clear, concise, and error-free proposal that persuades reviewers that your research is important to fund now.  Participants will have an opportunity to review examples of edited proposals and try their hand at revising.  Learn more about how an editor reviews grants and in turn improve your writing to develop a more competitive proposal.  Suggestions on how best to work with an editor will also be provided.  Light refreshments will be provided.
