We are actively seeking experts to help support our goals. From Entrepreneurs in Residence (EIRs), Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and mentors, you can make a difference for startups looking for help from experts, like you.
The University at Buffalo seeks to expand its network of EIRs, SMEs and mentors (collectively, External Experts). We intend to engage External Experts who are as diverse as our portfolio companies and the technologies we seek to advance. For those with the required expertise and a passion for growing the Western New York innovation economy, we are offering several opportunities:
A successful entrepreneur who knows how to translate technology from research labs into the marketplace. You have demonstrated experience accelerating technology startups in either life-sciences or physical sciences. You are passionate about the Western NY innovation economy. You are willing and able to commit approximately 20 hours per week for 12 to 24 months.
Work closely with faculty and students and inventors at UB and its partner institutions to commercial technology through new ventures. You will work with a variety of university-initiated ventures, while identifying a handful of high potential start-ups as your primary focus. You may join or lead a startup team, lending your entrepreneurial expertise to translate a specific opportunity from concept to a functioning, high-growth company.
Provide access to leading technologies and numerous scientific and financial resources. Provide a flexible work environment and compensation for your efforts.
Altruistically motivated, mission driven and pasionate about developing the next generation of entrepreneurs.
You have successfully launched new products and are equally comfortable working with academics/scientists and within an established industry.
You are a service provider who has experience working with startup companies tackling strategic and tactical issues related to one or more of the following:
Work with a variety of university-initiated ventures on short-duration projects when the need is identified by IHUB staff and/or EIRs.
Provide referrals to clients and a retainer agreement.
A successful business person who lives in WNY or who has strong ties to our community and/or one of our partner institutions. You have successfully launched new products and are equally comfortable working with academics/scientists and within established industry. You are a great listeners/questioner and provide advice with a patient and empathetic style. You are willing and able to activate your personal networks in support of Innovation Hub’s lab to market objective.
Have an opportunity to opt-in to provide your expertise to select portfolio companies in many ways, including: through programs, such as the National Science Foundations’s (NSF) I-Corps; through incubator office hours; or with specific startups as part of an advisory team.
Provide access to leading technologies, mentoring opportunities. and numerous networking opportunities for you to engage with like-minded individuals.
Our External Expert network is supported by the Innovation Hub. The Innovation Hub is a collaboration among our partner institutions to help accelerate the commercialization of technology innovations via new ventures. Empire State Development is providing, as part of the Buffalo Billion innovation funds, at $32M grant to UB to stand up Innovation Hub initiative.
