The Governor of NY has updated social distancing guidelines to groups of 10 or less.  With the weather being so nice, why not host a socially distancing pizza party with your friends?

Homemade Pizza

I make homemade pizza that my friends and family rave about. My daughters’ friends expect it when they come over to our house.

I’m sort of a pizza snob in the fact that I make homemade dough and sauce and use fresh mozzarella but you can buy dough in the store or even from your favorite pizza restaurant.  You can make the pizza sauce or make it easy on yourself and just buy a jar from the grocery store.  I cut up circles of fresh mozzarella and place around the sauced dough, but you can also use bagged, shredded mozzarella.  Toppings are endless, you could go traditional with pepperoni or just plain cheese, or you could be more creative and do BBQ chicken with onions or Buffalo chicken pizzas. Here's a tip from my book if hosting a pizza party, make individual pizzas and allow people to add whatever topppings they want on it.

You could make it more healthy and pair the pizzas with a salad but I’ll be honest, that never happens at my house.  Sometimes I make a garlic butter sauce and brush it on the crust when the pizzas are done cooking. We usually cook them at 500 degrees in our oven on cookie sheets until the crust is crunchy and the cheese has melted. But in warmer months, we have a pizza grill insert that allows us to cook them at a higher temperature.  You could also cook them outside on a grill if you brush the grates with extra virgin olive oil as well as well as one side of the crust. The trick for grilling pizza is to cook one side of the dough until it begins to brown, then add the toppings to the slightly grilled side and return to finish cooking.

Social wellness is a sense of connection and belonging. The social dimension of health involves creating and maintaining a healthy support network. Social wellness includes the interaction of the individual with others, the community, and nature. You can meet social distance requirements by each person sitting at least 6 feet apart and bringing their own chairs. Each family can also bring their own drinks and any other snacks that they might want to eat. Being able to enjoy the pizzas outside while sitting at least 6 feet apart will check off all aspects of social wellness, while being able to eat delicious food!

Pizza Recipe

Dough Ingredients:

1 package of rapid-rise yeast in 1 cup of warm (not hot water) & let sit about 5 min until bubbles appear

2.5 cups of flour (I use King Arthur brand)

1 TBS. extra virgin olive oil

Pinch of salt

Sauce Ingredients

1 Can of whole San Marzano tomatoes

Salt

Fresh basil leaves cut up

Directions

  • Mix dough ingredients together – you can add water if it’s not sticky enough.
  • Kneed on floured surface and then put in a greased bowl, cover with sahran wrap and a kitchen towel.
  • Let rise until doubled in size.
  • Mash the tomatoes with a potato masher and mix together.
  • If cooking in an oven, preheat to 500 degrees, put pizza on a greased cookie sheet or a pizza stone and cook until cheese is melted and the crust has browned.
