It's a time to celebrate the benefits of outdoor activities and recreational pursuits. For college students, particularly those at the University at Buffalo (UB) without a car, this month is a perfect opportunity to discover the wealth of recreational options available close to home. Whether you're looking to de-stress, get active, or simply enjoy nature, there's something for everyone.

The Benefits of Recreation

Engaging in regular recreational activities has a myriad of benefits, both physical and mental. According to the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), participating in outdoor recreation can:

  • Boost Physical Health: Regular physical activity helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improves cardiovascular health, and strengthens muscles and bones.
  • Improve Mental Health: Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being.
  • Enhance Social Connections: Recreation provides opportunities to meet new people, build friendships, and strengthen community ties.

Western New York offers a diverse range of recreational activities, from stunning natural parks to urban green spaces. Here are a few highlights:

  1. Niagara Falls State Park: Just a short trip from Buffalo, this iconic park offers breathtaking views of the falls, hiking trails, and picnic areas. For UB students, the park is accessible via public transportation, making it a great day trip destination.
  2. Letchworth State Park: Known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth features dramatic gorges, waterfalls, and over 60 miles of hiking trails. While it’s a bit farther from Buffalo, organized trips through UB or carpooling with friends can make this adventure feasible.
  3. Buffalo’s Olmsted Parks: Designed by the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, these parks include Delaware Park, South Park, and others. They offer beautiful walking paths, sports facilities, and peaceful spots for relaxation.

UB Recreation: Accessible and Inclusive

UB Recreation offers a variety of activities that don't require a car and are perfect for students looking to stay active. During July, UB Recreation focuses on "Open REC: Sports," which includes a range of sports and activities that prioritize enjoyment and physical activity over fierce competition. These activities, included with your Recreation membership, are welcoming to individuals of all skill levels and backgrounds.
