Synopsis

Five female friends, three engineering students and two Electrical Engineers, discuss issues they currently face in school and the workplace such as micro-aggressions, meritocracy, and structural barriers.

The case can be used to help develop career skills that may be useful to achieving long-term success, such as:

  • Becoming a change agent in your organization
  • Forming alliances with other women
  • Overcoming Stereotype threat / Impostor Syndrome

Outcomes

Upon completion of this case, students will be able to:

  • Recognize microagressions, meritocratic ideologies and colorblind systems of beliefs related to navigating STEM workplaces and educational settings as an underrepresented group member.
  • Identify strategies for building your professional support network for career advancement.
  • Identify strategies for collaboration with other women in STEM.
