According to Carnegie Mellon University, the workshop is designed for “doctoral students and postdocs who are interested in advancing teaching and research careers of women in Civil and Environmental Engineering.”

Participants will interact with faculty members from top institutions and build a professional network with other scholars in the field. The Rising Stars Workshop features five sessions. The first three sessions take place in Pittsburgh in September and October 2022, followed by two virtual sessions in January and March of 2023. The Rising Stars workshop launched at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012 and has been hosted at different universities since.

Yu graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2021 with a PhD in civil engineering. Her research focuses on earthquake engineering of nuclear facilities, including probabilistic risk assessment, seismic isolation, and fluid-structure interaction of liquid-filled equipment. While enrolled as a student at UB, Yu worked on several projects funded by the US Department of Energy. Advised by SUNY Distinguished Professor Andrew Whittaker, Yu has published 9 journal articles and 29 other papers and reports, with a total citation count of 150.
