The University at Buffalo (UB) Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director. ICDS is a partnership between UB’s Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDSE) program and UB’s Center for Computational Research (CCR). ICDS was formed to better respond to the demand for skilled workers who can thrive in the rapidly evolving fields of computational science and data analysis. The Director will be expected to envision, develop, lead, and sustain the multidisciplinary research activities and initiatives within ICDS, the university, and in the wider entrepreneurial ecosystem. The Director will lead both the Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering program and the Center for Computational Research, guiding the further growth of a strong interdisciplinary graduate program and a nationally recognized supercomputing facility.
UB seeks candidates who can effectively lead a diverse community of students and faculty, and create a vision that helps all constituents reach their full potential. The successful candidate will also demonstrate leadership to creatively engage local, state, and national constituents, to enhance the research, educational, and outreach activities of ICDS which will enhance UB’s prominence as a leader in computational and data science research and education across a range of rapidly evolving fields.
ICDS has an interdisciplinary focus and is a collaborative effort between six UB schools: the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; the College of Arts and Sciences; the School of Management; the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; and the School of Public Health and Health Professions, along with the Center for Computational Research. The Director will be appointed as a Full Professor in one of the departments of the six collaborative schools and will report to the deans of the six associated schools.
ICDS offers: a doctoral program of study in CDSE; a Professional Master’s degree in data science and applications; a Master’s degree in engineering science with a focus on data science; and continuing education data science modules. ICDS also coordinates undergraduate and graduate courses in data science topics and coordinates interdisciplinary research with a focus on cyber science, data science, and complexity science. The Director will also manage the direction and operations of CCR to support the academic and research focus of CDSE.
Preferred candidates for the position as ICDS Director will have a record of scholarly accomplishments, teaching experience, a sustained externally funded research program, and have demonstrated commitment to collaborative research and educational activities. They will also have demonstrated leadership and have a broad vision of how data science will be evolving over the next 10 years and be able to position UB appropriately. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to engage others to create and execute an organization’s vision, to navigate successfully within and collaborate across multiple academic departments and the public sector to achieve research objectives. Preferred candidates will also have demonstrated management acumen, proven ability to optimize resource usage, mitigate risk, and ability to mentor, motivate, and maintain a culturally diverse staff. They are also expected to have proficiency in running or leading major research-based computing resources at the forefront of computational techniques.
