Education:

  • PhD, Sociology, University of Minnesota, 2019

Professional experience:

  • Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Criminology, University at Buffalo

What mentoring means to me:

As a person with direct lived experience with the carceral system, I have experienced both good and bad (although well-intentioned) mentoring. I am hoping to provide good mentorship to individuals with either direct or indirect experience with the criminal legal system.

As a professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology I teach classes on crime and punishment and do research on American criminal punishment. I am also an avid rock climber.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Academic Culture

  • Decoding and demystifying academic culture and norms.
  • Taking a non-traditional path to grad school.
  • Uncertainty about staying in grad school.

Personal Experiences

  • Experiences related to being a woman.
  • Experiences related to previous incarceration or being system-impacted.

I have both personal and professional experience with nearly every aspect of the criminal legal system and I am hoping to find a way to mentor others with similar direct or indirect experiences.
