What mentoring means to me:

I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors throughout my life. They’ve served as guides, champions and friends—always in my corner, helping me prioritize and navigate challenges when the workload felt overwhelming. Without their support, I wouldn’t have achieved my master’s degrees or my PhD.

What I truly love about mentoring is the chance to provide exactly what someone needs, whether it’s a break from the grind, a safe space to brainstorm ideas or encouragement during tough times. As a NEAR mentor, I aspire to give back to those navigating their own programs, offering a supportive voice to cheer them on, a sounding board for ideas, or simply an empathetic ear from someone who has been through it all.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Academic Culture

  • Considering a non-academic path after grad school.
  • Dealing with politics and conflict with faculty or peers.
  • Decoding and demystifying academic culture and norms.
  • Taking a non-traditional path to grad school.
  • Uncertainty about staying in grad school.

Other Topics

  • Being an adult learner while raising a family and working full time; following an atypical path to degree completion.

Personal Experiences

  • Experiences related to being a woman.
  • Experiences related to class and/or socioeconomic status.
  • Experiences related to mental health and/or abilities.
