What mentoring means to me:

I enjoy mentoring because I feel that my mentees bring a lot of value to my work. I learn from them as much as they learn from me. I also know how hard it is to understand academia and to figure out how to manage graduate school. I remember my time as a graduate student well. My mentor was very supportive and kind. She knew how to help me figure out what I wanted to do and she invested in me. I want students to have a good experience and to find their passion, and having strong mentors who invest in them is part of that process. Mentoring is critical to student development. I am 25 years into my career and still have a network of mentors who help me in my current position to be a stronger administrator, researcher and mentor. I hope to instill the value of mentoring, particularly mentoring networks, in my students as well.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Academic Culture

  • Dealing with politics and conflict with faculty or peers.
  • Decoding and demystifying academic culture and norms.
  • Taking a non-traditional path to grad school.
  • Uncertainty about staying in grad school.

I know that there is a "hidden curriculum" in academia. I like to work with students to demystify the process of graduate school and the levels of administrator in academia so that they can get the support they need.

Other Topics

  • Goal setting, work-life fit, time management, and understanding the university structures and administrative levels.

Personal Experiences

  • Experiences related to being a woman.
  • Experiences related to class and/or socioeconomic status.
  • Experiences related to physical health and/or abilities.
  • Experiences related to mental health and/or abilities.
