What mentoring means to me:

I believe that we are all part of a pyramid standing on each other to reach ever higher in our understanding. I believe that at this point in my career I am in the middle of that pyramid. Many have helped to raise me higher and I like to help those who will come next have a firm footing to stand on. I believe in honesty and will always offer that but I am sometimes too blunt. I like everyone else am a work in progress and am juggling many commitments. I have mentored medical students, graduate students, residents, and junior faculty; many of those have developed into long standing relationships and some have faded away as people move on to their next phase.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Minority Experiences

  • Being a woman and related discrimination.

Personal Circumstances

  • Caregiving for children.

Academic Culture

  • Dealing with politics and conflict with faculty or peers.
  • Decoding and demystifying academic culture and norms.
  • Taking a non-traditional path to grad school.
