THROUGH PARENT'S EYES

A Qualitative Study on Montevideo Neighborhoods

Seth Frndak, Yanina Gallo, Elena I. Quierolo, Gabriel Barg, and Katarzyna Kordas
Polluted Canal in Montevideo.

Introduction

The neighborhood context is important for cognitive and behavioral development in children. It is unclear what neighborhood-based challenges are unique to Montevideo, Uruguay. We used photovoice and interviews to empower parents:

(i) to share neighborhood-based concerns

(ii) convey suggestions for neighborhood improvement.

Since 2009, Dr. Katarzyna Kordas and research partners from the Catholic University of Uruguay have investigated childhood exposures to multiple metals in Montevideo, Uruguay. Data from their Salud Ambiental Montevideo (SAM) study has informed researchers as to how low-level metals, when present in a “mixture”, influence the development of children.

Childhood exposure to metals, pesticides and other neurotoxins can result in irreversible neuropsychological impairments. Whereas metal exposures have declined in the general U.S. population and significant progress has been made in the reduction of certain metals in the environment, other environmental exposures, like pesticides and air pollution, are continuing to be a problem. These exposures often occur in the context of low family resources, poor nutrition, or unsafe neighborhoods.
