Project Background

  • Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) of the United Nations established the Global Sanitation Fund (GSF) to provide funding for countries with high needs for sanitation and hygiene improvement
  • GSF has invested in behavior change approaches that enable large numbers of people in 13 countries to improve their access to sanitation and adopt better hygiene practices
  • In Malawi, GSF is supporting a government-led sanitation and hygiene initiative called Accelerated Sanitation and Hygiene Practices Programme (ASHPP)
  • ASHPP is aimed at supporting communities to adopt and use safe hygiene practices by eliminating open defecation and increasing their access to improved sanitation
