A donation of appreciated securities, including stocks or bonds, allows you to make a bigger impact and save on taxes.
Stock gifts, for the benefit of the University at Buffalo, are made through the University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc. (Federal ID #16-0865182), using one of three methods, depending upon which is preferred by the donor.
The quickest and most secure method to donate stock is to transfer from the donor’s broker to the Foundation’s broker through the Depository Trust Company (DTC).
Such transfers should be made to DTC #8862 (Merrill Lynch) for credit to account #81C-04001, naming University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc.
Simultaneous notification by fax, e-mail, or letter directed to the Foundation is also important. This notification should include:
An acceptable alternative to the above is to have the donor’s broker open an account in the name of the Foundation to receive the transfer or to use an existing Foundation account at that broker. To accomplish this, the donor’s broker should contact the Foundation to secure the pertinent information.
Donating securities registered by the donor in the name of the University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc. requires the donor to work through the stockholder relations office of the company to arrange for a certificate to be issued in the Foundation’s name. This certificate should be sent to the Foundation’s office by registered mail or overnight courier accompanied by a letter indicating the name of the donor.
Donating a stock certificate registered in the donor’s name requires sending a stock power signed by the donor (or certificate with donor’s signature on the back) transferring the certificate to the University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc.
Due to the negotiable nature of this approach, care should be taken to hand deliver, or send by registered mail or overnight courier. Separate mailings, one with the certificate and a second with the signed stock power also may be advisable.
A transmittal letter signed by the donor indicating the number of shares, the company name of the stock, and the certificate number should accompany the mailing.
To be sure your gift is designated as you wish, please contact your broker or banker stating your wish to give securities to University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc. Specify the type of stock and number of shares, whether your gift is designated for a specific purpose, and the date on which the gift is to be transferred.
Valuation of marketable security gifts is established at the average of the high and low quoted selling prices (or the average of the bid/ask in the case of certain securities) on the date the donor relinquished control of the assets.
