George J. Mitchell Scholarship for Study in Ireland

This award requires university nomination or interview and cannot be applied to directly. Students must work with the Office of Fellowships and Scholarships and meet university deadlines.


The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service. Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one academic year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Eligibility Requirements

  • High GPA (3.8 - 4.0).
  • Between the ages of 18 and 30.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before beginning study as a Mitchell Scholar.
  • Student must have a compelling reason for pursuing graduate study in Ireland.
  • Student must demonstrate scholarship and leadership.
  • Student must have a sustained commitment to community and public service.

Selection Process

A faculty committee will review the nominee’s application and determine if the student will be endorsed to the Mitchell Scholarship Program.
