How to Apply

Step 1. Review the Application Process

Please review the Application Process document, which contains detailed instructions.

Step 2. Complete and Submit the Application Form and Financial Statement

Send the Application Form along with an original bank statement, a photograph, and a nonrefundable $150 tuition deposit made payable to the University at Buffalo. Admission is offered for one semester initially. Admission for additional semesters of study will be processed before the end of the current semester. Please note the deadlines below.

Forms can also be used for next year's semesters.

Step 3. Complete and Submit the Residence Hall Application Form (Optional)

If you wish to stay at a University at Buffalo residence hall, you must also complete the Residence Hall Application Form and return it with a separate $300 nonrefundable, nontransferable residence hall deposit made payable to the University at Buffalo (fall and spring semesters only).

Step 4. Complete and Submit the School Transfer Form, If Applicable

International students on an F-1 visa who are applying to the Intensive English Program at the UB English Language Institute and who are currently attending a U.S. college or university must submit a School Transfer Form before admission to the IEP can be processed.

Deposits and Fees

The mandatory program deposit of $150 can be paid online. Return a copy of the payment receipt with your application documents. To pay the program deposit of $150, go to the “Pay the deposit online” link below and complete the form. Only complete the sections indicated with a red asterisk (*). Do not answer “Student Person Number or Social Security Number.” Indicate which semester you are applying to: Summer, Fall, or Spring. Select “credit card” rather than eCheck. UB does not accept eCheck.

To pay the UPS shipment fee, go to the “Pay the UPS shipment fee” link below. Applicants who do not pay the $40 UPS fee will receive their acceptance letter and I-20 form via US international airmail which could take between 7-14 days.

How to Obtain Your Visa

If you intend to apply for a student (F-1) visa, a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20) will be sent to you upon request with your ELI Intensive English Program acceptance letter. You must apply for and obtain your student visa to enter the United States before you leave your home country. To apply for your visa, take the letter of acceptance, the Certificate of Eligibility, and SEVIS payment receipt to the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, along with your passport and official letter of financial support, and any other necessary supporting documents, such as transcripts or academic records. Additional information on how to apply for a student visa is available at the Department of State Web site. B-1, B-2 and F-2 visa holders are not permitted to enroll in any full-time program of English Language or academic study.


The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced implementation of the new SEVIS Fee effective September 1, 2004. The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) was mandated by Congress to help maintain information about international students and exchange visitors while they are in the U.S. Congress also mandated that the SEVIS program be self-funding; therefore DHS has implemented the SEVIS fee. The SEVIS fee must be paid before you can have your visa interview at the U.S. Consulate to which you will apply for your student visa. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office maintains a Web site with detailed information about the new SEVIS fee. Please visit the ICE website below and carefully read the instructions about paying the SEVIS fee. The SEVIS fee can be paid through the mail or on-line with a credit card. We encourage you to use the on-line payment method as it is much faster than paying by mail. Please read all instructions carefully.
