Calling all emerging scholars. Become a contributor to the most visited information website in the world: Wikipedia.

Project description

Wikipedia affords students the opportunity to become content editors and contribute in an open environment to the free flow of information.

As a student of the University at Buffalo (UB) you have a wealth of high-quality information at your fingertips that many scholars around the world would envy. Using these and other "open access" resources you will work on improving or creating Wikipedia entries related to a topic of your choosing that has been approved by a member of the Libraries' Education Services team. You will work through the Wikipedia training modules at a pace that works for you; however, all work is expected to be completed by the end of the semester (Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer).

Through this project you will learn valuable research skills, report writing, citing, summarizing, and how to find and use appropriately licensed images. Wikipedia is a community of expert and budding scholars collaborating in a respected peer ecosystem to create a high-quality body of knowledge free to all. You can be a part of the community!

Project outcome

Students will substantially improve existing Wikipedia entries or create new entries (languages other than English encouraged).

  2. After you receive approval from the mentor to start this project, sign up for the digital badge series
Fulfilling Academic Major/Minor Requirements

If you are planning to use this project to satisfy program requirements for your academic major or minor, it is your responsibility to obtain approval from your academic department prior to beginning the project. 

Preparation activities

Once you begin the digital badge series, you will have access to all the necessary activities and instructions. Your mentor has indicated they would like you to also complete the specific preparation activities below. Please reference this when you get to Step 2 of the Preparation Phase. 

  • Meet with the UB Libraries' Director of Education Services, Cynthia Tysick, to discuss the scope of the project and choose an area of interest to explore editing. 
  • Meet with a member of the Education Services team who will serve as project mentor.
