Political Science at UB: A History

Park Hall on UB's campus, home of the political science department.

Seeking students to aid in publishing materials about the history of the Political Science department at UB.

Project description

The Department of Political Science came into being fall 1963, after the private University of Buffalo merged into the SUNY system. In its over 50-year history, the Department and UB experienced major changes. The number of faculty members of the Department oscillated between three and over thirty. Despite renown for individual members, the overall patterns of Political Science history; e.g. curriculum change, involvement with other parts of UB and non-University entities, results of major grants; merit wider knowledge.

Having joined the University at Buffalo faculty in 1964 and having filled some major administrative positions as well as academic ranks, I enjoy a unique perspective on the history of the Department. I have already published several sections about this. Two chapters remain to be written, which I wish to complete in the 2019-2020 academic year, with the help of a student assistant.

The person[s] selected for this opportunity must meet at least biweekly with Professor Welch and submit brief reports about progress made prior to each session. Applicants must submit their CV, names of two references (preferably from UB), and their unofficial transcripts.

Project outcome

Completion of the Department's history, including electronic publication of at least two chapters. Other chapters have already become available, at https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/political-science/about/political-science-ub/our-history.html.

Preparation guidance

Once you have registered for the Project Preparation Digital Badge, you will receive further instructions related to the activities you will need to complete. In addition, you will also complete the following preparation activities for this particular project:

  • The recipient(s) of this opportunity, sponsored by Political Science, will become familiar with trends in the discipline and their implications. They can also utilize their prior learning, to achieve deeper understanding of UB history. Most important, they can look to the future, seeing how recipient(s) of BA, MA and PhD degrees in Political Science can contribute to the more effective functioning of political systems, domestically and internationally.
  • The recipient(s) will meet regularly with Professor Welch, initially to become acquainted with the goals of the research, and subsequently on at least a biweekly basis to review progress. If the recipient(s) contributes significantly to the published version of the Department history, they will be prominently mentioned as co-authors.
