Production Design and Fabrication for Art Exhibitions in the Czech Republic

Project description

The student will assist in all facets of pre-press design, proofing, printing and finishing of custom wallpaper and glass tiles for two upcoming solo art exhibitions at museums in the Czech Republic. The student will also be involved in the inventory management, packaging and shipping preparation process.

Exhibitions:

1.  Synagogue in Český Krumlov, June 30 – August 29, 2025
This exhibition will include a site-specific installation on two, 8-by-40-foot walls.

  • Student will assist in design work on Adobe Illustrator software, and print photo-positive films.
  • Screen-printing and color-proofing on paper and fabric samples on-site in the CFA building at the UB North Campus.
  • On-press screen-printing at Red Disk Studio: 255 Great Arrow Ave, Buffalo, NY

2.  City Museum in Dvůr Králové nad Labem. September 15 – December 15, 2025

  • This exhibition will feature glass objects, both sculptural and Grecian, frieze-style low-reliefs objects which reference and respond to the museum’s collection of mid-twentieth century
    printed textiles.
  • Student will assist in creating rubber and ceramic molds for casting glass.
  • Operate and monitor the kiln throughout firing cycles.
  • Participate in all aspects of enamel printing and powder-printing on glass.
  • All of the fabrication work of kiln-formed glass will be on-site on the CFA building at the UB North Campus. 

Project outcome

For the student, this project will consist entirely of hands-on, experiential learning, both in the UB studios and beyond, in professional art studio settings.

The student will:

  • Acquire technical skills and problem-solving skills, which will enhance their own creative activity and abilities and allow them to leverage new knowledge in the development of their personal art practice.
  • Learn all aspects of custom wallpaper design and professional fabrication techniques.
  • Gain an array of skills and experience in glass fabrication, including techniques such as slumping, casting and kiln carving, all of which lie beyond current UB course offerings.
  • Obtain experience in the preparation of a museum-quality art exhibition.
  • Gain the confidence to pursue their own ambitious projects.
  • Secure job experience in their area of study which will enable them to pursue future employment in the field.
  • Development of confidence and communication skills to effectively collaborate within a team framework.
  • Build personal insight and relevant experience in a multi-faceted, professional project which will help prepare them for several career paths in visual arts, including, designer, technician, educator and administrator.
  • Become better networked and acquainted with Buffalo’s vibrant community of working graphic designers and artists.
