UB Lab Detects Variants, Only ‘Comprehensive Variant Surveillance in the Area’

Updated April 3, 2021

UB researchers with the Genome, Environment and Microbiome Community of Excellence (GEM), who are conducting the only local genetic surveillance studies on the SARS-CoV-2 virus, have identified two California variants among local people who recently tested positive. The reports quoted Jennifer A. Surtees, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry and co-director of GEM, who said “I think we need to be concerned, I think we’re finding these and we’re, as I said, we’ve only sequenced a small fraction of the cases that are out there.”
