In this session, we will discuss issues related to managing personnel in an academic research laboratory. This workshop will assist faculty members who direct research labs in academic medicine to identify and advance the knowledge and skills they need to assemble and maintain a successful team. By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Articulate principal differences between leadership and management
  • Explain the importance of clearly developed mission-based job descriptions
  • Understand the dictum, “Hire for integrity, train for skill,” and commit to training and developing lab personnel
  • Recognize the importance of organizational culture and climate
  • Become familiar with models of influence in managing others
  • Appreciate the importance of learning about legislation and institutional policies pertaining to hiring-and-firing practices
  • Know where to access helpful resources related to managing personnel in academic medicine
