FAQ

The following FAQ explain the circumstances under which UB is required to comply with this new testing policy, and what the policy means for students.

  • What happens if I miss my reserved appointment time for pre-Thanksgiving break testing?

If you are a student who missed a scheduled appointment or are having issues making an appointment, please utilize the option for WALK-IN TESTING AFTER following ALL outlined instructions (Note: You will only omit Step 1 as a walk-in). You will still need to pre-register, prepare for the test (i.e. no teeth brushing, etc.), and have your SUNY test registration readily available on your phone/device before entering the testing location.

  • How does pre-Thanksgiving break testing work?

    On-campus testing

This test, developed by SUNY Upstate Medical University and approved by the New York State Department of Health for use by all SUNY institutions, evaluates saliva samples collected from individuals that have been pooled (combined) with others. This pooled sampling enables researchers to test greater swaths of the community more rapidly while preserving the scientific integrity of the data.

    Off-campus testing

You may fulfill your requirement by taking a test off campus and providing documentation to the university. To schedule, get in touch with your health care provider. To fulfill your obligation for SUNY pre-break testing, you must get tested between Nov. 9-18 and no more than 10 days before your departure from campus. You must also document your test with UB

Please note, if you participated in randomized surveillance testing earlier in the semester, you must get retested as part of this new SUNY mandate. If you are currently assigned to take part in randomized surveillance testing, you should report for both testing procedures.

  • Why is UB testing on-campus students before Thanksgiving break?

A new SUNY policy requires testing of students across SUNY’s campuses, including UB, before the university concludes in-person instruction prior to Thanksgiving break. This SUNY-wide mandate is intended to prevent community spread of the coronavirus as many students leave campus and finish the semester remotely.

  • For the pre-Thanksgiving break testing requirement, do students who test positive need to quarantine/isolate at UB?

Per SUNY's mandate, UB is able to house and support residential students who test positive for COVID-19 and require isolation and residential students who need to quarantine due to exposure to the virus within 14 days before closing for the fall semester.

However, students who test positive or who are identified as a close contact of someone who tests positive can isolate or quarantine at home as long as they inform those that they will be living with of their COVID-19 related status, they must travel using private transportation (i.e. no planes, trains, buses, or car-sharing services) and their home should accommodate them with their own bathroom/bedroom. Once home, they must follow their local health department guidelines related to isolation and quarantine.
