11/20/21: UB urges campus community to get COVID boosters

UB is strongly encouraging COVID-19 booster shots for those on campus who are eligible.

While COVID cases are rising in the area, UB’s strong adherence to a comprehensive set of health and safety measures greatly reduces the risk of infection on campus. However, data shows that protection afforded by the vaccines does decrease over time. Receiving a booster can augment immunity to a level even higher than initially following full vaccination and help to ensure the long-term safety of our campus community.

UB offers booster shots at clinics on the university’s North, South and Downtown campuses. Shots are also available at the New York State vaccination site in Harriman Hall on UB’s South Campus. You can also receive a booster at various local pharmacies, health departments, clinics and other locations. Visit vaccines.gov, text your zip code to 438829, or call 1-800-232-0233 to find locations near you. For additional details, check UB’s COVID-19 website

As the semester continues, the weather turns and many of us plan to gather with family and friends for Thanksgiving, it is critical that we do all we can to protect ourselves and those around us, both on campus and off.

Who is eligible to receive a booster shot?

Everyone ages 18 and older should get a booster shot either when they are 6 months after their initial Pfizer or Moderna series or 2 months after their initial J&J vaccine.

Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose. Some people may prefer the vaccine type that they originally received while others may prefer to get a different booster. CDC’s recommendations now allow for this type of mix and match dosing for booster shots.
