Genevieve “Kay” Bishop, recently retired associate professor in the Department of Library and Information Studies, Graduate School of Education, died Jan. 10 after a long illness.

Bishop joined UB’s library science program in 2002, shortly after the School of Information and Library Studies became the School of Informatics. The School of Informatics was dissolved in 2006, but moved as a department of Library and Information Studies to the UB Graduate School of Education.

Bishop earned a BA in English education from Florida State University, an MA in library science from the University of South Florida, a MEd in guidance and counseling from Washington State University and a PhD in library and information studies from Florida State.

She had a varied career, which included service in the U.S. Peace Corps as a volunteer English and science teacher in Nepal; as a junior high and high school English teacher; a media specialist in schools in Florida and Germany; and a librarian at the American school in Montagnola-Lugano, Switzerland.

Her career in higher education included faculty positions at Murray State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Kentucky, the University of South Florida, and finally UB. She retired in December 2012.

Bishop was a member of and frequent contributor to the conferences and publications of the International Association of School Librarianship and the American Library Association’s following divisions: Association for Library and Information Science Education, Association for Library Service to Children, American Association of School Librarians (and Educators of Library Media Specialists Section) and Young Adult Library Services Association.

She also was a member of the New York Library Association, School Librarians' Association of Western New York, University of South Florida Alumni Association, Beta Phi Mu, Phi Kappa Phi, Friends of Nepal and Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.

A celebration of life/memorial service will be held on Anna Maria Island, Fla., within the next few months.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bishop’s honor may be given to a number of organizations. The list may be found on the Graduate School of Education’s website.
