Theory for Non-Major is intended to teach basic music theory, musicianship, and listening skills, with a heavy emphasis on thinking and writing intelligently about musical works. The course is designed both for those with some musical experience and those without any. Class begins with study of the fundamentals of music theory and ends with some beginning harmonic analysis. Throughout the session, writing and analytical skills will be developed via listening discussion and essays.

Course Description |

Elements of writing music; melody, rhythm, intervals, chords, harmony, tone color, and styles of musical expression. Music signs and symbols; traditional language of tonal music, with examples drawn from popular and classical music. No prerequisites. |
