This undergraduate studio will investigate Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) systems within a variety of design practices. We will begin with an overview of computational thinking and the expanding list of areas it applies itself to. Thereafter we will survey several currently used A.I methodologies (optimization, classification and generative systems) and use case studies to understand how they are applied to specific design problems in specific contexts. From these case studies we will attempt to understand how designers use computational thinking to make specific computational methods effective. The course will also survey critical views on A.I. practices and illustrate some of the traps machine learning systems create for the public and designers working with them. |
