Survey of Latin American colonial literature. Includes several texts on the Qualifying Exam reading list for the colonial period.


Course Description


Examines European, indigenous, and creole perspectives on conquest, evangelization, native traditions, and colonial experience in Latin America. Close attention to questions of just war, religious syncretism, indigenous cultural realities and continuities, and an emerging creole consciousness. Readings from Colon, Diaz del Castillo, Las Casas, Cabeza de Vaca, Sahagun, Ercilla, Garcilaso de la Vega, Erauso, and Sor Juana, among others.
