  Course Description
Brief review of classical field theory; discrete and continuous symmetries, conservation laws, and Noether's theorem; canonical quantization of the free Klein-Gordon, Dirac, and electromagnetic fields; path integral quantization; interacting fields and covariant perturbation theory; quantization of Yang-Mills theories; Feynman diagrams; higher-order calculations, ultra-violet and infrared divergences, factorization theorems, regularization, and renormalization; renormalization group and asymptotic behavior; spontaneous symmetry breaking; global and local symmetries and modern gauge theory of elementary particles and their interactions; the standard SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) model of particle physics, electroweak unification and the Higgs mechanism; Quantum Chromodynamics, asymptotic freedom, and quark confinement; techniques for precision calculations for the Large Hadron Collider; examples of beyond-the-Standard-Model physics, effective field theory formulation of new physics.
