  Course Description
This course examines selected works by literary juggernaut Miguel de Cervantes, including his masterpiece Don Quixote and his collection of Exemplary Novels as well as some of his experimental theatrical pieces known as Entremeses or Interludes. We will focus on Cervantes?s self-reflective writing style and his astonishing insights into the reality-framing power of baroque (mass)culture. Keeping this Cervantine critique in mind, we will discuss our own media condition, drawing on blockbuster movies, paperback bestsellers, and other products of the entertaining and tourist industries, from Disneyworld to the 24-hour news media phenomenon, and also on the political satire of such comedians as Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and Sacha Baron Cohen. Course assignments include oral presentations, a mid-term paper (5 double-spaced pp. undergrads; 7-10 pp. grads), and a final essay (7-8 pp. undergrads; 12-15 grads).
