  Course Description
Advanced course focused on development and design of studies using the two major observational study designs in epidemiologic and public health research: cohort studies and case-control studies. Topics covered include developing a study question, identifying, recruiting, and enrolling a study population, exposure assessment, ascertaining valid outcomes, bias and confounding, analytic considerations, monitoring adverse events, participant well-being, ethical considerations, and reporting and interpreting study findings. Students gain practical experience in critiquing published research that uses the study designs, and in developing a research question and designing an appropriate study utilizing the study designs to address the question.
