Wang Research Team Presents at CDC Conference

On September 12, 2018, a research team led by associate professor Dr. Helen Wang presented four studies on the controversial Netflix series 13 Reasons Why at the CDC National Conference on Health Communication, Marketing, and Media.
Four Department of Communication students participated in the presentations: S. Divya (a newly minted BA from our UB-SIM program in Singapore), Juliet Parris (an MA student), Zoey Zhiying Yue (a PhD student), and Chris Haoran Chu (a PhD candidate).
The panel featured research on how the Netflix entertainment program portrayed sensitive issues such as teen suicide, mainstream media coverage of the controversy, audience discussions on popular social media platforms such as Reddit, and a quasi-experiment comparing viewers and non-viewers through cognitive mapping.
