An article published January 18, 2018 in the Smithsonian exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect illness interviews Professor Mark G. Frank. The study conducted tested whether people were capable of determining whether a person was healthy or sick based on facial images, and the findings hope to inform AI training in the future. Mark Frank weighs in on the importance of this research, noting: "Understanding what our faces say about our health will be important in training AIs...AIs could help humans do real-time analysis and decision-making, which could be especially important when people are 'overwhelmed by too much information.'" Detecting such human micro-expressions, Frank asserts, can also be useful in predicting whether a tired driver will crash or whether a person with depression is recovering.
