Move in at the University at Buffalo

Moving in to your new room or apartment at UB is an exciting time. Whether you’re coming from across the state or around the world, we’re here to help make the process as easy and fun as possible.

Fall 2018 Move In

Important Dates

* Return to this site for additional move in information in early July.

August 23: Apartment and residence hall move in for all new students

August 24: Greiner and apartment move in for returning students

August 25: Residence hall move in for returning students

August 25-26: Fall Opening Weekend 

August 27: First day of fall classes; all on-campus students must be checked in by 5 p.m.

New Student: (A student who is new to UB or attending UB for the first time)

Returning Student: (A student who is returning to UB or has attended UB in the past) 

 

 

Know What to Bring

Residence Halls

Residence Hall What to Bring List

Your UB residence hall room will include these items (per person):

  • Extra-long (XL) twin bed & mattress
  • Desk & chair
  • Dresser
  • Closet or wardrobe
  • Nightstand (not in Governors Complex)
  • Floor lamp or built-in lighting

Rooms have tile floors and window blinds/shades. Nearby you’ll find a lounge with a stove, microwave, and sink. Each building is equipped with a laundry room. Most halls (except Goodyear, Clement, and Greiner) have community-style bathrooms so plan for a trip down the hall carrying the necessities. Beds can be raised up to 34 inches, but lofting beds is not allowed. UB furniture may not be removed from your room.

Identification

  • Student ID (needed to check in)
  • Driver’s license or passport (NOTE: passports or enhanced driver’s licenses are required to enter Canada)
  • Health insurance card/info
  • ATM Card/credit cards/checkbook

Medications

  • Anything you take regularly and special instructions for things like allergy shots
  • Spare eyeglasses, contact lenses, supplies
  • Current written prescriptions
  • Headache/cold medicine
  • First aid kit

Linens

  • Pillow (1-2)
  • Bed linens (for XL twin), including blanket, comforter, sheets, mattress pad
  • Towels: at least 2 bath, 2 hand, 2 face

Personal Items

  • Clothes for warm and cooler fall weather
  • Rain gear (e.g. jacket, umbrella)
  • Swim suit, workout gear, sneakers
  • Toiletries (incl. brush, comb, shaving items, tissues)
  • Hair dryer, curling/straightening iron
  • Shower shoes 
  • Robe
  • Shower tote

Laundry/Clothing Care

  • High-efficiency (HE) detergent, fabric softener, stain remover (Please do not use Purex 3-in-1 sheets or similar products. They damage laundry machines and leave stains.)
  • Laundry basket/bag, hamper, hangers
  • Iron and mini-ironing board

School Stuff

  • Book bag/messenger bag
  • Computer/laptop
  • Jump (flash) drive
  • Ethernet Cord (25' recommended) 
  • Computer supplies (e.g. printer, ink, paper)
  • Binders, folders, paper, writing utensils
  • Planner/calendar

Household Items

  • Cell phone and charger 
  • Surge protector/power strip (New York state prohibits use of extension cords.)
  • Sewing kit, safety pins
  • Plastic storage cubes or totes (underbed storage)
  • Cleaning supplies (e.g. wipes, dishwashing soap, all-purpose cleaner, paper towels, sponge, dishtowel)
  • Bathroom rugs (for Clement, Goodyear or Greiner)
  • Microwaveable dish, pan, can-opener
  • Wastebasket

Food & Snacks

  • Mug, cup, plate, silverware (1-2 of each)
  • Non-perishable snack foods

Optional

  • Flashlight, batteries, camera
  • Recreation: Bike with strong u-lock, inline skates, frisbee, basketball, soccer ball, cards, board games
  • TV with coaxial cable, BluRay/DVD player
  • Small stereo/headphones/MP3 Player
  • Music/Movies
  • Mini refrigerator (2 per quad or triple, 1 per double) no larger than 4.5 cubic feet and 3 amps
  • Fan (only Greiner is air conditioned)

Decoration (Makes a room like home)

  • Posters, photos, artwork, calendar, family picture
  • Removable mounting tapes (3M kind) or poster putty
  • Plants
  • Small area rug (6' x 8' will work in all rooms)
  • Desk lamp or additional floor lamp

Prohibited Items in all Residence Halls

  • Halogen, upward facing bowl and multi-arm lamps
  • Microwaves, toaster ovens or open coil appliances (e.g. space heaters, hot plates)
  • Bed risers 
  • Air conditioners
  • Electrical cords (only surge protectors please)
  • Pets other than fish (10 gallon tanks or less)
  • Candles, incense, and plug-in type air fresheners
  • Permanent adhesives and nails
  • Weapons (e.g. firearms, airsoft guns, non-kitchen knives)
  • Fireworks, propane, butane or  other explosive materials
  • Alcohol (prohibited in first-year areas and for persons under 21)

Please Note:

Renters insurance is strongly recommended. If you’re not covered by your parent/guardian’s policy, IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED you purchase renters insurance before you arrive at UB.

Smoking

  • UB is a smoke free campus. Smoking is prohibited -  including use of e-cigarettes & hookahs

Residence hall rooms have limited space and storage. While storage in our rooms varies, we invite you to view our 360° photo gallery of storage options. Please note that not all options are available in all rooms.  

Mail & Packages—Ship Ahead

You can send mail and packages ahead of your arrival. All mail and packages will be held at the mailroom in your complex for your convenience.

  • Weapons (e.g. firearms, airsoft guns, non-kitchen knives)
  • Fireworks, propane, butane or other explosive materials
  • Personal grills and propane tanks (certain types of outdoor grills are allowed in Creekside and Flickinger. See your official Guide to Campus Living for details)

Please Note:

Talk to your roommate before you pack or buy anything. Storage space is limited and many items can be shared, like TVs.
